May is Haitian Heritage Month. The celebration is an expansion of Haitian Flag Day held on May 18th, a major patriotic day celebrated in Haiti and by the Haitian Diaspora. Various events We remember, celebrate and honor : v The unity reached by the Black and Mulatto officers at their historic congress on May 15-18, 1803 to fight together against slavery in the French colony of St. Domingue, and for its independence, which they proclaimed on January 1, 1804. v The creation of the blue and red Haitian flag on May 18, 1803. v Haitian General Toussaint Louverture who was born on May 20, 1743. v Haitian achievements and contributions across the globe. v Awareness and understanding of Haitian culture and traditions. v The strength and dedication of our Haitian/Haitian - American youth.
