Haitian Heritage Month
:  May

A Celebration of History, Culture, and  Pride

May is Haitian Heritage Month. The celebration is an expansion of Haitian Flag Day held on May 18th, a major patriotic day celebrated in Haiti and by the Haitian Diaspora. Various events

are proudly held in its honor, i.e., parades, cultural activities, ceremonial flag raising, and
exhibits.

We remember, celebrate and honor :

v The unity reached by the Black and Mulatto officers at their historic congress on May 15-18, 1803 to fight together against slavery in the French colony of St. Domingue, and for its independence, which they proclaimed on January 1, 1804.

v The creation of the blue and red Haitian flag on May 18, 1803.

v Haitian General Toussaint Louverture who was born on May 20, 1743.

v Haitian achievements and contributions across the globe.

v Awareness and understanding of Haitian culture and traditions.

v The strength and dedication of our Haitian/Haitian - American youth.
